It was built by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498 and is named after one of the most famous and celebrated explorers from the Age of Discovery. Located on the seafront road along the beach, the pillar was first erected at the sheik’s house, but later removed and re-erected where it is today. The pillar and the cross are both made from original Portuguese limestone material. The Portuguese built it to give direction to those following the sea route to India. This antique was built about a century before Fort Jesus in Mombasa, making it one of the oldest European constructions in East Africa. The monument has become the most-renowned attraction site for local and international tourists visiting Malindi. Later, you will have lunch and spend the afternoon at the beach.

After breakfast, you will take 30 minutes to drive to the ruins of Gedi in Watamu. The Gedi Ruins are one of Kenya’s great mysteries. It is set in an idyllic location on the Indian Ocean and buried deep in a lush forest. The town was thought to have been founded in the early 13th century, although hard evidence eludes most scientists.

Left standing today is numerous coral-brick houses, a palace as well as an impressive mosque. However, it is not the quality of the ruins that amazes visitors but the advanced nature of the settlement. Gedi was, in many ways, a very advanced city with streets, running water, and flushing toilets.

You will return to the hotel for lunch after the Gedi Ruins tour, and then enjoy the resort facilities as well as the beach. Dinner and your overnight stay are at Diamonds Dream of Africa Resort.
